The five finalist of Startup St. Bernard have been announced by the pitch competition's organizers, the Meraux Foundation and the St. Bernard Economic Development Foundation. The live pitch competition, held in conjunction with New Orleans Entrepreneur Week, offers finalist the opportunity to compete for a prize package valued at $110,000 including cash and in-kind services.
The seafood industry has been challenged in recent years by external factors, including the influx of lower priced seafood from international markets, the long-term impacts from the oil spill, and potential damage to fisheries from diversions. There have been recent efforts to support the industry, including workforce development and direct marketing initiatives; however, challenges remain.
This is the first credit union in the history of St. Bernard that is open to all St. Bernard Parish citizens based on geographic area. UNOFC officials expressed excitement over the expansion as a huge milestone for both UNOFCU and for St. Bernard Parish.
